The voluntary carbon market is booming and ready for future growth. Companies are setting ambitious climate targets of net-zero emissions and engaging in the voluntary market to achieve these targets, not only because of increased awareness of the climate crisis, but also because it has commercial value. At the same time, the climate change landscape, marked by increased social awareness and new legal obligations in international agreements – including those stemming from the historic Paris Agreement. In this changing context, the voluntary market remains an important mechanism for increasing investment in much-needed carbon reductions and degradations. As part of its transformation strategy (coal mining, use of renewable energies, development of energy services), ENGIE has been studying since 2015 how to make the evolution of its greenhouse gas emissions compatible with the Paris Agreement. Anne Chassagnette: We are focusing on new technologies and developing an efficient generation mix approach that allows us to respond to renewable energy interactions by combining the strong growth of electricity and renewable green gases – especially hydrogen – to provide a continuous and decarbonised supply while optimising the use of existing grids. Since 2014, we have also been pioneers in the field of green finance. Since then, we have issued €12 billion in green bonds, making us the largest issuer of green corporate bonds.

Combined with the European Economic Recovery Plan, these obligations have enabled us and will continue to enable us to finance projects that boost employment and support the transition to a climate-neutral economy through the development of new technologies. A climate-neutral transition for the future: In order to support and anticipate profound changes in consumer expectations, the Group pursues a global approach to investment, incubation or exchange with local ecosystems. With innovative technologies and digital solutions, experts develop new offerings, optimize production costs and improve energy efficiency. In terms of physical hazards, extreme weather events (e.B. floods, droughts) or gradual events (e.B. Rising sea levels, warming temperatures) have a strong impact on ENGIE`s electricity production facilities and on the gas and electricity needs of its customers. Anticipating the impact of these phenomena is therefore essential to make ENGIE`s infrastructure and activities resilient. In the medium term (5 years), one of the most important climate impacts on ENGIE`s assets is the availability of water, which is essential for the production of electricity from water or heat. BASED on the extreme weather events of recent years, ENGIE assesses the potential future financial impact of this type of event. In 2019, the Group achieved two of these objectives: the rate of renewable capacity and the rate of reduction of specific greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) from energy production.
